Youth Woodworking

This is a five-day course ending on Friday

For Kids Only, Ages 10-17

Special Hours: 9:00-4:00, including  a one hour lunch break

Give a young person in your life the opportunity to explore the wonderful world of woodworking.  This class will introduce students to the basic concepts of woodworking, incorporating best woodworking practices and artful design to create a one-of-a-kind project with their own hands.  They will be taught how to safely use basic hand tools, along with critical thinking to design and build their own project. The week will also have some other special activities that might even include a short boat ride to a nearby island for an afternoon hike.

Becca is an experienced educator who currently teaches PK–8 woodworking at Dedham Country Day School. She has also had the opportunity to teach adults at both craft schools and colleges (most recently at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship), and is excited to share her love for woodworking and art with kids.

This is a new and unique class for WoodenBoat School. With the disappearance of shop classes from many schools and the increased amount of time young people spend looking at screens, it feels more important than ever to empower the next generation with the joy, strength, curiosity, and appreciation for our surroundings that a woodworking practice brings.

We are asking that students be at least 10 years of age, and expect that most will be under 15, though anyone from 10-17 years old is very welcome. We also ask that students have a genuine desire to learn about woodworking and art. While there will be constant adult supervision, this class should not be thought of as a place to simply drop off your kid for the week, and we expect students to be on their best behavior. This class takes place during family week, so there will be other young folks working around campus.

*An adult will need to join their student for the Sunday July 16th evening welcome dinner/orientation, along with dropping them off and picking them up each day.  The whole family is invited to the Friday evening Lobster bake,(included for participants, $35 per person for family members).
